President William Ruto has called on young Kenyans to exercise responsibility and restraint ahead of planned demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the Gen Z-led anti-Finance Bill protests.
The President made the remarks during the 95th St John Ambulance Annual Parade and Inspection, where he stressed the importance of making decisions that promote safety and peace.
President Links Emergencies to Personal Choices.
Ruto said many emergencies and crises stem from individual actions that escalate into dangerous situations, noting that personal choices can have far-reaching consequences.
“One of the most important lessons of St. John Ambulance is that emergencies do not happen. More often than not, they begin with a choice. A driver chooses speed over caution. Someone chooses carelessness around a fire. Someone chooses violence instead of restraint. Then, in a matter of moments, lives are changed forever,” said the President.
His remarks come as families of young Kenyans who lost their lives during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests prepare for a nationwide remembrance march scheduled for June 25.
The families last week announced plans for the event, which aims to honour those killed during the demonstrations while renewing calls for justice, accountability and compensation.
Organisers have dubbed the march “We Will Never Forget” and expect thousands of Kenyans to participate in commemorating victims of the Gen Z-led protests that drew nationwide attention in June 2024.
The planned demonstrations are expected to serve both as a memorial for those who died and as a platform for continued demands for accountability over the events that unfolded during the protests.
