Maraga Explains Decision to Enter Politics

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has said he never had political ambitions until recently, explaining that his decision to seek the presidency was driven by what he described as the country's urgent need for leadership anchored in the rule of law and constitutionalism.

Speaking during a recent interview as part of his presidential campaign, Maraga said politics had not been part of his personal career plans. He noted that his years in the Judiciary were dedicated to serving the country through the administration of justice rather than pursuing elective office.
According to Maraga, his decision to enter politics came after witnessing what he considers a decline in governance, accountability, and respect for the Constitution. He said these concerns convinced him that he should seek public office and offer an alternative leadership vision.

Campaign Focus

Maraga, who is seeking the presidency under the United Green Movement, said his campaign is centred on restoring integrity in public service, strengthening institutions, fighting corruption, and ensuring that government operates within the Constitution.
He has maintained that he is "not a career politician" and that his entry into politics is motivated by what he views as an urgent national need rather than personal political ambition.

Background
Maraga served as Kenya's Chief Justice from 2016 until his retirement in 2021. During his tenure, he became widely known for presiding over the Supreme Court decision that nullified the 2017 presidential election, a landmark ruling in Kenya's constitutional history. Since leaving office, he has frequently commented on governance, constitutionalism, and the rule of law before officially launching his bid for the 2027 presidential election.
