Kenya Railways has announced that its new luxurious Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) First Class coaches will be fully operational from July, marking a major upgrade to passenger services on the Nairobi–Mombasa Madaraka Express route.
The corporation unveiled the new coaches during a presentation on June 19, stating that the enhanced first-class service is designed to offer passengers greater comfort, convenience and a premium travel experience.
Premium Onboard Experience
According to Kenya Railways, the new First Class coaches will feature onboard Wi-Fi, enabling passengers to remain connected throughout their journey. Travellers will also receive first-class meal service, with attendants serving food and beverages directly at their seats during the trip.
The coaches have been fitted with modern interiors and upgraded amenities aimed at providing a more luxurious rail travel experience.
Part of Service Modernisation
The rollout forms part of Kenya Railways' ongoing efforts to modernise the Madaraka Express service and improve customer experience. The corporation has previously introduced upgraded economy and premium coaches featuring enhanced seating, charging ports, air conditioning and improved accessibility.
The new first-class coaches are expected to complement these improvements while catering to passengers seeking a higher level of comfort.
Enhancing Rail Travel
Kenya Railways says the introduction of the coaches reflects its commitment to improving passenger services and making rail transport more attractive. The corporation expects the upgraded coaches to strengthen the appeal of the SGR as a preferred mode of travel between Nairobi and Mombasa.
The new First Class coaches are scheduled to begin operations in July, with passengers set to enjoy enhanced onboard services, improved comfort and a more premium travel experience.
