UN Security Council Condemns RSF Over Escalating Violence in Sudan, Calls for Immediate Ceasefire
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has denounced Sudan’s paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), over what it termed ongoing attacks and efforts to destabilize the Kordofan region.
The council voiced grave concern about the persistent violence across the North African nation, including in Darfur, and urged all warring sides to stop the fighting immediately through a negotiated ceasefire.
In a press statement, the UNSC strongly criticized reports of repeated drone strikes targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure, and humanitarian workers, as well as their facilities.
The condemnation follows findings by an Independent UN Fact-Finding Mission, which concluded that acts of genocide had been carried out by the RSF amid widespread human rights abuses by all parties involved in the conflict, including the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).
Council members also denounced all violations and abuses against civilians, including ethnically driven attacks, and warned against the use of starvation as a tactic of war.
They further called for accountability for those responsible for the violations and emphasized that priority must be given to advancing dialogue toward a comprehensive, inclusive, and Sudanese-led political process.
