Postmortem report on the sudden death of Dr Job Obwaka
The sudden death of Dr Job Obwaka has now been medically explained, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had stirred speculation and concern within Kenya’s medical community.
A postmortem conducted on Tuesday confirmed that the Nairobi Hospital director died from a cardiac arrest linked to an underlying heart condition. The examination, carried out at Lee Funeral Home, brought together three pathologists representing different interests—government, family, and the defence—and all reached the same conclusion.
According to family pathologist Joseph Ndungu, the findings were thorough and unanimous. He explained that Dr Obwaka suffered a cardiac event that ultimately led to his death. The agreement among all parties has helped ease tensions around the circumstances of his passing.
Family members, who were present during the procedure, expressed confidence in the findings. They indicated they are satisfied with the outcome so far, even as they await further laboratory results, including toxicology tests expected in the coming weeks. For them, the focus has now shifted to mourning and preparing for his burial.
However, the case has not been without controversy. The defence team representing a key figure in the investigation has criticised authorities for what they describe as unnecessary public attention. Lawyer Levy Munyeri argued that the matter was sensationalised, causing undue distress to his client, and called for the investigation to be concluded swiftly.
Police reports indicate that Dr Obwaka had spent time with a woman, Beatrice Wangari, shortly before his death. She told investigators that she had prepared a meal for him, after which he retired to the bedroom and later collapsed. Detectives recovered several items from the residence, including utensils, medication, and a partially consumed bottle of wine, all of which are now undergoing forensic analysis.
Dr Obwaka had reportedly met Wangari earlier that day in Kitengela before being rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
As investigations continue pending final lab results, the family is preparing to lay him to rest on May 15th at his rural home in Mumias, Kakamega County—bringing to a close the life of a respected medical professional whose death has left many questions, some now answered, and others still under review.
