From Herding Cows To Leading Corporations: The Inspiring Journey Of Daniel Ndonye, Kenya's First BCom First-Class Graduate.
Daniel Ndonye, the current Independent Chairman of I&M Bank, is a name synonymous with excellence, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements in Kenya’s corporate and financial sectors. A chartered accountant by profession, Ndonye’s career spans over three decades, including an illustrious tenure at Deloitte & Touche, where he spent more than 30 years, 20 of which he served as the Managing and Senior Partner.

Ndonye’s life story is not just about professional success—it’s a testament to the transformative power of education, determination, and unwavering focus. From humble beginnings in rural Kenya to the boardrooms of the country’s leading corporations, his journey is as inspiring as it is remarkable.

Early Life: From the Fields to the Classroom
Daniel Ndonye was born into modest circumstances, where daily life revolved around helping his family. During his early years, he spent hours herding his elder brother’s cows and goats, a task given to him by his mother. However, the job came with its share of challenges. Occasionally, the animals would stray into neighboring farms, causing damage to crops and earning young Ndonye severe reprimands.

These early experiences shaped his approach to life. “I decided to focus on education, and I started topping in standard one. In 1960, I sat this exam called the common entrance exam, which most people failed, but I passed it in the first attempt. When I sat for the CPE paper, I got a letter inviting me to Alliance High School for form one,” he recounted in an interview with Capital News.

The fear of a life spent herding cattle became a powerful motivator for Ndonye. He embraced learning with dedication, determined to carve a different path for himself.

Academic Excellence: Breaking Barriers
Ndonye’s academic achievements are historic. He became the first person in Kenya to earn a First-Class Honours degree in Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), setting a benchmark that would inspire generations of Kenyan students. His commitment to excellence didn’t stop there. He achieved several pioneering milestones, including being the first Black Managing Senior Partner at Deloitte, the first African member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), and the first Black Chair of the ICAEW Members Advisory Board.

Reflecting on his success, Ndonye explained, “It’s actually negative motivation that got me going. I wanted to sit for my exams, pass, and go to a school far away so that I couldn’t herd cows. When I went to school and started doing well, there was this motivation to just keep doing well. Success motivates.”

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi and is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, and the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya.

Career Highlights: Leadership at the Top
Daniel Ndonye’s professional journey reflects both competence and groundbreaking leadership. His tenure at Deloitte & Touche, where he rose to become the Managing Senior Partner, marked him as a trailblazer in a profession historically dominated by non-African leaders. His leadership helped shape Deloitte’s operations in Kenya and set standards for professionalism, ethics, and corporate governance.

Beyond Deloitte, Ndonye has served on the boards of several leading companies, including five that are listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). His expertise has also extended to public service; he was a board member of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) until September 2023, when the board was reshuffled by the Energy Cabinet Secretary.

Through his corporate and public service roles, Ndonye has consistently championed governance, accountability, and innovation. His work has influenced both the private sector and regulatory frameworks, making him a respected voice in Kenya’s economic development.

Legacy and Inspiration
Daniel Ndonye’s story is a vivid illustration of how perseverance, education, and ambition can overcome humble beginnings. From avoiding the fate of a life spent herding cows to excelling in the highest echelons of corporate Kenya, his life demonstrates that early setbacks can become the fuel for lifelong achievement.

For young Kenyans, Ndonye’s journey offers valuable lessons: focus on education, seize opportunities, and let challenges inspire rather than discourage. His achievements prove that greatness is possible, regardless of one’s starting point.

In an era where Kenya continues to cultivate leaders for the corporate world, Daniel Ndonye stands out as a role model whose dedication, trailblazing accomplishments, and commitment to professional excellence will leave an enduring legacy for generations to come.
