Instagram DMs No Longer Secure: Meta Ends End-to-End Encryption on Private Chats.
Meta Inc., the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has officially discontinued end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages (DMs) as of May 8, 2026. This move allows the platform to access private chats, raising fresh concerns over online privacy for millions of users. While WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger retain their encryption, Instagram users will now need to take extra steps to secure their messages.
What This Change Means for Instagram Users.
End-to-end encryption is a security feature that ensures only the sender and recipient can read messages, keeping them safe from third-party access. Meta stated that very few users had opted into encrypted messaging on Instagram DMs, unlike WhatsApp, where encryption is automatic. As a result, the company decided to remove the option entirely.
Users whose messages are affected by this change are advised to download their chats. Those using older versions of Instagram should update the app before attempting to save any messages.
The decision follows pressure from law enforcement and child safety organizations, who argued that encrypted messages limit their ability to protect children online. While this change allows Meta to access chats, photos, videos, and voice notes on Instagram, end-to-end encryption for WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger will continue uninterrupted.
