Industrial Action Grounds Calm at JKIA as Aviation Workers Strike, Authorities Activate Contingency Plans
Travelers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) faced delays and uncertainty after aviation workers downed their tools, triggering disruptions to flight operations at the country’s busiest airport.

The strike, led by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), saw staff withdraw services over what Secretary General Ndiema described as unresolved workplace grievances. The industrial action affected key ground and support operations, causing schedule adjustments and delays for both departing and arriving flights.

Despite the disruption, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) assured passengers that safety remains uncompromised. The regulator announced that contingency measures had been activated to maintain essential airport functions and minimize the impact on travelers.

National carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) urged passengers to monitor their flight status through its official website and communication channels before heading to the airport. The airline indicated that operational changes may occur as the situation evolves.

The strike places fresh pressure on Kenya’s aviation sector, a key pillar of trade, tourism, and regional connectivity. Travelers have been advised to remain patient as negotiations are expected to continue in a bid to restore normal operations.

More updates are expected as discussions between union leaders and aviation authorities progress.
