Dick Wathika: The Rise, Sportpesa Billionaire Battles, and Tragic Early Death of Kenya’s Youngest Mayor

How Political Clout and Corporate Ambition Propelled Sportpesa – and Broke Its Architect

Dick Wathika, remembered as a political prodigy and influential businessman, is credited as the mastermind behind Sportpesa, one of Kenya’s largest betting firms. Leveraging his deep political connections and corporate networks, Wathika played a pivotal role in bringing two Bulgarian investors, Guerassim Nikolov and Gene Grand, to Kenya to set up the betting giant.

Early Political Stardom

Born in 1973, Wathika’s leadership journey began early. At just 19 years old, he was elected a councillor, marking the start of a promising career. In 2004, he made history as Nairobi’s youngest mayor, retaining the position in the subsequent election. His political ambitions continued when he won the Makadara parliamentary seat in 2007, although this victory was annulled three years later due to election irregularities. Attempts to return to Parliament in 2013 were unsuccessful.

The Sportpesa Story

Wathika’s business acumen came to the forefront when he facilitated the establishment of Sportpesa in Kenya. Recognizing the potential of the betting industry, he sought investors, successfully convincing billionaire Paul Wanderi Ndung’u to inject Ksh 100 million into the venture. Wathika also oversaw the setup of casinos and lotteries across Nairobi, often stepping in personally to cover financial gaps and keep the business afloat.

Despite his central role, as Sportpesa began generating billions, Wathika was gradually sidelined by the Bulgarian investors. In 2015, engineer-turned-pilot Ronald Karauri invested Ksh 30 million and eventually assumed the CEO position, replacing Wathika.

Stress, Health, and the Tragic End

The pressures of leadership during Sportpesa’s rapid rise were immense. With allegations of tax evasion, money laundering, and subtle threats looming over the company, Wathika’s health deteriorated. Reports indicate that any mention of Sportpesa during his hospitalization caused his condition to worsen. Tragically, the former mayor passed away in December 2015 at the age of 42, leaving behind a story of ambition, brilliance, and heartbreak.
