The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a nationwide road safety campaign targeting public service vehicles and private motorists ahead of the upcoming school reopening, in a bid to curb accidents and protect learners.
In a statement, NTSA said the operation will focus on enforcing traffic regulations, vehicle roadworthiness, and driver compliance, particularly on major highways and known accident-prone areas. The authority noted that the return of students typically leads to increased traffic volumes, raising the risk of road crashes.
“Motorists are urged to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic rules to ensure the safety of all road users, especially school children,” NTSA said.
The agency added that special attention will be given to school transport vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards, including proper licensing, insurance, and speed regulation measures.
Traffic police officers have been deployed across the country to support the enforcement exercise, with NTSA warning that those found flouting traffic laws will face penalties, including fines and possible suspension of operating licenses.
The crackdown comes amid continued concerns over rising road accidents in Kenya, with authorities emphasizing the need for collective responsibility among drivers, pedestrians, and other stakeholders.
Parents and school administrators have also been advised to ensure that vehicles transporting students are compliant with safety requirements to minimize risks during the school term.
NTSA reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing road safety and reducing fatalities, particularly during high-risk periods such as school reopening dates.
