From Banker to Flour Mogul: How Munir Thabit Built Grain Industries and Made Ajab & Umi Flour Household Names in Kenya

Munir Thabit: The Visionary Behind Grain Industries Limited

Munir Thabit, a former banker and visionary entrepreneur, co-founded Grain Industries Limited (GIL) in 2017, transforming Kenya’s flour market with popular brands like Ajab and Umi. At a time when the country was politically tense following disputed elections, many thought Munir was taking a huge risk. “When everyone was closing down for fear of election violence, we opened our doors,” he told The Star.

Starting with just a diploma in banking, Munir later pursued an MBA at York St John University in the United Kingdom. Before venturing into business, he served briefly in the Kenya Air Force in 1983 and then joined Barclays Bank, where he worked for eight years across several branches. Later, he spent 18 years in Fast-Moving Consumer Foods (FMCG) in Mombasa, before leaving due to lack of appreciation in a family-run setup.

Determined to create his own path, Munir scouted for investors and set up a 15 billion Ksh milling company in Mombasa, transforming a bushy land filled with snakes and monitor lizards into a modern agro-processing hub. Starting with just three employees, GIL has grown to over 500 staff, including millers, drivers, accountants, and a full sales team. Within 36 months, production skyrocketed from 750 tons to 2,250 tons of wheat and 400 tons of maize daily.

Munir emphasizes automation, allowing mills to operate remotely, and his sales team leverages mobile technology for efficiency. Outside of work, he is a devoted family man with three children and has also adopted his nephew following a tragic road accident.
