A political storm is brewing in Machakos County as Mavoko MP Patrick Makau openly clashes with the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya over the party’s gubernatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Makau, who has declared his interest in the Machakos governor seat, has recently come out strongly against the party leadership, accusing them of undermining democracy within the party. His remarks have set the stage for what is shaping up to be a fierce political battle.

Speaking in Athi River, the legislator criticized party leader Kalonzo Musyoka indirectly of favouring incumbent Governor Wavinya Ndeti for a direct ticket.
Makau insisted that the Wiper party must conduct free and fair nominations, warning that imposing a candidate would undermine democracy and alienate supporters. He boldly stated that he is firmly in the race and ready to face any opponent in a competitive primary.
In his remarks, Makau emphasized that he has a strong support base on the ground and challenged the leadership to allow party members to decide the flag bearer through a transparent process.
The Machakos gubernatorial race is already shaping into a high-stakes contest. Besides Makau and the incumbent Wavinya Ndeti, other aspirants are also eyeing the seat, making the contest even more competitive.

Political analysts argue that internal wrangles within Wiper could either strengthen democracy within the party—or weaken its unity ahead of the elections.
The whole question is Can Makau Win?
Makau’s chances depend on several key factors:
1. Party Ticket: If Wiper conducts open nominations, Makau stands a fighting chance. However, if a direct ticket is issued, his path becomes more complicated.
2.Grassroots Support: His confidence suggests he has built a solid base in Mavoko and parts of Machakos, but translating that into county-wide support will be crucial.
3.Incumbency Factor: Wavinya Ndeti, as the sitting governor, enjoys visibility and influence, which gives her an advantage.
4.Party Unity: Ongoing disputes could split votes or push candidates to seek alternative political paths.
