KITENGELA NEWS : Kitengela Hawkers Demand Inclusion in New Market Amid Harassment Claims
Hawkers in Kitengela have once again called on the Kajiado County Government to prioritise them in the allocation of stalls in the ongoing market construction, urging authorities to recognise their role in the local economy.
Speaking during a press briefing shortly after the release of their chairman, Peter, who had been arrested and later freed on cash bail, the traders expressed frustration over what they termed as continued neglect and intimidation. They insisted that as long-time traders in the area, they deserve first priority once the market is complete.

The hawkers also raised concerns over alleged harassment by county askaris, accusing them of frequent crackdowns and demanding taxes even during late hours. They described the situation as unfair and disruptive to their already fragile businesses.

Human rights activist and leader Jamil Longton called on the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to intervene, alleging that a county administrator has been seen carrying a pistol and threatening traders. He urged security agencies to ensure the safety and protection of hawkers.
Women traders also voiced their concerns, emphasising that their small businesses are their only source of livelihood. They noted that the income they earn supports their families, pays school fees, and covers rent, making the ongoing challenges even more difficult.

The traders are now appealing to the county government to act swiftly, address their grievances, and ensure fair treatment as development projects continue in the area.
