India Speeds Up Ebola Vaccine Drive Amid Africa Outbreak

India has stepped up its contribution to the global fight against Ebola by accelerating the development of a vaccine targeting the rare Bundibugyo strain, as Central Africa grapples with a deadly outbreak that has raised international concern.

The vaccine candidate, ChAdOx1 BDBV, is being developed through a partnership involving the University of Oxford, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the Serum Institute of India. The initiative aims to address a critical gap in global health preparedness, as no licensed vaccine currently exists for the Bundibugyo variant.

India Accelerates Ebola Vaccine Development Efforts

Researchers are leveraging the viral-vector technology used in the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to speed up development and potential deployment. Health experts say the approach could help protect vulnerable populations if the outbreak continues to spread

 .
The outbreak, centred in parts of Central Africa, has prompted urgent international action, with the World Health Organization (WHO) warning that stronger containment measures are needed to prevent further loss of life.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said a vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain would be a significant breakthrough in controlling the current outbreak and improving readiness for future Ebola emergencies.

Although India has not recorded any Ebola cases, authorities have enhanced disease surveillance and strengthened preparedness measures at points of entry and healthcare facilities. The country has also provided medical supplies and protective equipment to support response efforts in affected African nations.

Public health experts say rapid vaccine development, combined with coordinated international action, will be essential in containing the outbreak and preventing wider regional transmission.
